October 24, 2015

3:30pm
We have a hen in the house! I finally picked her up about an hour ago. It was like pulling teeth to get answers from the gal I got her from. She lives barely a mile away. I had hoped to pick her up this morning. Oh, well. She is here! She is very friendly, too. She's about 1.5 years old. She is a Rhode Island Red, or a cross of that breed.
This is the picture from her ad.
Nikky is obsessing, of course. Whining and carrying on about the new 'baby'.
She was checking out the bunnies in the house while I was setting her food and water out on the deck.
The cage is temporary, until I get the rest of the coop (it's sitting in) painted, tiled and the front put on it. I need to get the wheels on it, too, as it is damn heavy to move.
She's already discovered the hanging bell toy.
I trimmed the feathers on one wing, so she can't fly over the rail and off the deck.
She's blocked on the deck for a few days until she gets used to things, then will go out in the yard during the day. She'll stay in the cage at night, and then the coop once it's finished.

I have another possible bunny buyer coming tomorrow. She's interested in the blue buck. :) Hope she gets him. The money will buy a big bag of organic chicken layer feed at Costco for the hen! I just bought a couple of little bags of treats at Tractor Supply on the way home with her and also giving her some of the doves' feed. Luckily, I have plenty of hay, due to the rabbits! So, it will all work out.

I made this today: Raspberry Cheesecake Fat Blasters Recipe OMG! Yum! And, soooo easy to make.
I started pulling up all the outdoor carpeting (that had been on the deck) from the yard behind the shed that my mom made me lay to block the weeds last year. Have to wait until Monday afternoon to put it in the garbage. Then, I'll start laying out the scalloped brick rings, that I got through Freecycle yesterday, where my mom wants more fruit trees planted along the fence ... The hen will have plenty of dirt to scratch in and I'll be planting clover in sections that I'll fence off so she doesn't dig the seeds up before they take hold. I've bought one can of clover seeds, but I think I will get about 3 more for the whole yard.

5pm
Well, my mom wants to name the hen Rachel ... :/

8:30am
I feel awful ... damn migraine ... couldn't sleep much last night ...

But, I have cages to clean and critters to play with and feed. Just going to go slow today until the pain passes ...

Going to separate the boy bunnies today, too.

11am
Parker and her bunnies are running around, playing, while I take a rest. I bred Kayla with Sheriff and moved him into the double cage. I'll be moving the boy bunnies into Sheriff's usual cage until they are gone.

So tired ...

Rowdy girls
Still feel lousy ... but, I gotta find something to eat, now.

Smoothie ... nice and easy and quick to make.

3:15pm
So, I showed my mom what I'm going to do for the future hens and for the yard behind the shed. And, she showed me which aloe-type plants she wants to move to the big brick box. We'll probably get some of them moved on Wednesday. She seems interested in getting chickens. I told her we'd get 2 and she said 3 and I told her no, as I need room for the grow-outs I'm going to be incubating. So, she was fine with that. I hope to get the incubator on eBay in the next month.

Migraine seems to be ratcheting down, finally.

4:30pm
Getting hungry. We are having organic spaghetti squash with homemade/homegrown tomato sauce, homegrown cherry tomatoes and Aidell's Italian Style with Mozzarella Cheese Meatballs
and topped with Parmesan cheese; and a side of homemade organic pear sauce. And, of course, raw milk.
8:30pm
I find it so weird that when a migraine goes away, you almost feel like you never had one ... I feel great now that it's too late in the day to get anything done other than feed the critters and put them to bed!

10:15am
The day started out good ... then, my mother emerged from her den ... grrr.

I took some new pics of the doves I'm selling and put them on Craigslist, along with the bunnies. Hope I get some nibbles!

This baby never got a name ...
It's raining!
Ah, had to go stand in it. Nikky does not like rain.

Still getting a good harvest from the cherry tomatoes - brought 10 in this morning. Along with 4 little hot peppers.

11:30am
Making a lot of recipes today. Right now, I'm working on Pear Sauce! The hamsters, rabbits and bunnies got the parings for lunch! Big treat. They don't get a lot of really sweet stuff.
Still warm. Mmmm. I filled 6 of these little ramekins.
Next is a new batch of tooth powder. First time I've tried this one. I usually make a paste. And, the first time I'm trying stevia. It's organic and unrefined, so it's still green ... not the white powder that I won't even touch.
Noon ... must eat something! Ah, leftover chicken wings!

And, the next recipe is Magnesium water! I've been wanting to make this for a while. One of the best ways to supplement magnesium. So damn easy!
Sadly, I could not find Milk of Magnesia in a glass bottle! Do they not make it that way any more ...?
Huh, it's raining again ... more ... heavier ... My sheets are hanging on the line ... :/ Oh, well ... rainwater won't hurt them and I have others to put on the bed tonight.

1:15pm
Listening to Daniel Vitalis' Rewilding Podcast #29 with Arthur Haines - Ancestral Survival Skills. I love his podcasts and this one is really great. Arthur is so damn intelligent.

Popcorn! I can't have it too often, but this is 100% organic, so it doesn't mess with my tummy too much. And, made in homemade butter!
5pm
Finally got the new modem/router hooked up and activated. Hopefully, my connection won't cut out any more!

And, the sun came out to dry my sheets. So, I just brought them in.

I am having trouble figuring out how to get an external hard drive with USB to hook up to an old plasma TV with HDMI ... I cannot find any adapters. I may have to hook it all up through my laptop, but that screws up the idea of my mom being able to use it to watch videos on that TV ... ugh. She refuses to touch a computer.

8:45pm
Great ... a migraine has hit hard. Damn it.

October 15, 2015

7pm
So, I forgot to post these bunny pics yesterday. They just love running around and running over me! Little hellions! They are 6 weeks old today. I need to start advertising them this weekend. And, Kayla will be bred with Sheriff this weekend.
What are you doing up there, Mama!
I've finally decided on chickens - quails just were not going to work out (at this time) upon further research. I am going to get 2 hens for eggs. And, an incubator to hatch fertile eggs that I can get from my farmer and some others I know. So, I can raise up meat. The city ordinance allows for 6 adult hens (but in my space, I know I only have room for two to forage in my little yard.) But, the chicks will be butchered at around 8-12 weeks, depending on the breeds I get. If I find the breeds I want for the hens, I may get them as chicks soon, or wait and get adults in the spring. I'll be getting the incubator before then ... so, I may hatch out the hens I want ... we'll see how it goes. The breeds I am interested in most are Araucana (I used to have some in Florida and really like them a lot) and Brahma (or crosses of those breeds.) I really like the look of both breeds and they are both sturdy with good laying numbers. I have a good sturdy outdoor wooden shelf structure on the deck that I am going to finish off with a couple of nesting boxes, perches and wire mesh front/doors for them to live in at night. They will have the yard behind the shed during the day to run around in safely. And, they will be able to visit neighbor Martin's 3 hens through the fence.

Paloma - my tufted ringneck dove - finally has a chance to be a daddy!! Doveling laid an egg last week! Now, I can finally sell (or eat) the other 3 grown dove chicks! I'd been waiting to see which would bow-coo or lay an egg, so Pal could have a permanent mate. I can't wait until they hatch some chicks to find out what colors they carry and if they will have his tuft!

I finally got my oil check the other day, so I got a 3TB external hard drive on sale at Fry's. Transferring ALL of my videos (movies/TV series, etc.) onto it from all my little HDs. Hope to then hook it up to one of the big TVs to watch them.

Oh, got my car back. Curtis put in the starter on Monday. Got it an oil change today! Finally! Next week, I can hopefully get it to pass the smog test. I already paid the registration that was due last week. Can't get the tags until it passes smog test, though.

It rained about an hour ago. Didn't last long, but I went out to stand in it for a bit. :)

I'm sad that I've missed out on Matthew Gray Gubler's latest limited edition T-shirt design. I have the previous four that he's done, so my collection will be incomplete ... :( I spent too much money today ...

October 4, 2015

Noon
I had fun cleaning the cages this morning! Parker and her bunnies 'helped' me! It was hilarious what they got into!
I use a double layer of painter's drop cloths from the dollar store to protect the carpet. Then, I lay a triple layer of flat bed sheets on top of that.

4:15pm
I made 2 quarts of lemon/tangerine-ade. So yummy.
And, I am making this wheat/gluten-free Lemon Poppyseed Muffin recipe - but without the sugar sprinkled on top. And, it tastes darn good!
