June 30, 2014

So, of course, my vacation has to end badly. Migraine ... and, major heatwave. 109°F predicted ... No painting today. But, I still have to work on the kitchen sink and my car before the heat gets too high ... Sucks. I really wanted to finish that deck-side wall!!!! :(

OK. The car needs oil and antifreeze. I have none. So, tomorrow, I'll try to get a quart of oil and I'll fill the radiator with water. Then, Thursday, I can get what I really need for it. Luckily, I should only need to work two days this week ... all local. So, if the car can't be used, I'll ride my eBike. Next week, I'm getting a bus pass! So sick of cars. I spent well over $100 on gas this month and I barely use the car 3 days a week. I didn't even put 700 miles on the car this month!

Migraine is bad. Willow bark and ice pack not helping ... at this point, work tomorrow is looking more and more unlikely ...

My mom is making tapioca. Mmmm.

Nikky had her first real meal of raw food! Ground chicken backs. She loved it. Ezra was jealous, so he got some more freeze-dried raw food. He wants more! They will have more tonight.
Licking the bowl clean!
Ugh. 101°F ... and the neighbors aren't helping my migraine with the firecrackers making Nikky bark! :(

103°F ...

I should have made sun tea today. But, I'm not going outside now. Already took Nikky out and we both wilted.

107°F ... ugh.

Down to 103°F ... Just went out to refill the birdbath it was bone dry. It had water at 11am! Damn.

I checked the Home Depot website and they have motor oil AND antifreeze. So, I'll ride my bike over there in the morning. Come home and top off the car and be on my way to work. I have my 2 weekly Davis stores I need to service and bunny greens to get at the co-op.

Headache is back to manageable and not killer migraine right now. So, I should have it kicked by tomorrow.

Headache seems gone! Just finished putting all the critters to bed. Found Little Girl settled on a new little squabbie!!! I decided last month to let the doves start nesting again. She and Big Boy lost their first clutch (the eggs weren't viable and never hatched ...) But, looks like we may have a new pair by the end of the week. These will be food for Ezra and Nikky when they are bigger. Little Boy and Squabbie have a pair of eggs they are setting, but they are not staying on them, so probably won't hatch. :(
I'm thinking of getting another unrelated pair of doves in the next couple of months for breeding. I have another cage that I just need to paint, which I will probably do next week. Sometimes I want to kick myself for not keeping my original 5 doves (which included Big Boy, Little Boy and Little Girl's parents ...) I'd love to start creating Pied doves for sale again. I used to breed doves many years ago and had many. I need to start checking Craigslist again. That's where I got my original 5 when we moved in here.

Whew! I am wore out! Just got home from the Plant Walk! That was an enjoyable hike with some nice people. There were 8 of us, plus Heather - the host of the walk. She has quite a bit of knowledge (but she was stumped on a couple of the plants and said she'd have to look them up.) I took about 80 pictures and will post the best ones on one of my other blogs. The walk was at Sutter's Landing Park and we walked along the American River. The drought in our area is really bad, so many of the plants that are normally in bloom, were not ... I learned quite a few new ones that I didn't know before. I ate a few elderberries for the first time and wild radish seed pods (peppery!) Had a salad with elderberry dressing and a potato salad with purslane. There were a lot of Canada Geese out on the river (took a pic!) I tried to get a pic of a little Cottontail that was about 10 feet from me, but the people behind me scared it ... :(

My mom did a lot of painting today. Some of the skirt and some of the wall.
The skirting is half done!

Aww. Teeny tiny white (or yellow) bell pepper!
And, of course, to make sure it wasn't a totally nice day ... the check engine light came on in the car on the way home! AGGGHHH. I hate cars. I must get a bus pass when I get my oil check next month!
And, I have a headache, to top it all off! Gah!

100°F! I still have a headache ...

I've pulled my last 3 listings on Listia. I decided to only list 'flat mail' items there. Nothing that won't fit in an envelope and cost one stamp. Tired of all the complainers on there ... Everything else will be listed on Bonanza and eBay or my website.

101°F! Shouldn't it be cooling off by now!?

I hate dealing with plumbing! Kitchen sink keeps clogging the past couple of days. Fighting with it again ... I might have to drag the hose inside and blow out the clean-out pipe that is in the kitchen closet ... fun ... I'll do that tomorrow if this other fix doesn't work ...

I wish I had some feverfew ...

Only one more day off before I go back to work on July 1. Off again on Friday for the holiday. I hope to get the front wall of the house painted next weekend.

I think we broke a record cleaning cages. Done in an hour! Including cleaning the dog yard. My mom is getting impatient to leave now! The Tasting Fair at the Co-op is from 11-3, so there is no hurry! I also want to stop at the berry bushes.

Woke up this morning to my computer monitor hanging across the desk! Ezra must have had a wild night! Luckily, it wasn't cracked, though it had some rub marks across the screen I was able to wipe off with computer wipes.

Got back from Davis about an hour ago. I was very disappointed ... We got there a bit after they were supposed to start. I had stopped at the berry bushes and that was a jackpot! Got to the co-op and got my bunny greens. Then, we wandered around and of the 20 or so vendors that were supposed to be there, only about 8 were set up and ready! And, of course, my mom was impatient and did not want to sit and wait for the others to set up/arrive ... had some yummy Llano Seco pork and sausage and tried The Latest Scoop gelato (so yum!) If I'd gone by myself, I would have stayed until they were all there ... oh, well. Maybe next year. But, here are the blackberries I foraged!!
Wild blackberries! Rinsed in vinegar bath. About a pint, I think. I'll forage more on Tuesday.
Spicy chicken bone broth ready to strain. This has been in the slow cooker the past 2 days.
Nice. I got the A/C parts I ordered, already! I'll try to get that done this week ... Might be Friday before I can, though.

Tomorrow, I have to leave early to be in Sacramento for the foraging meet-up. Hopefully, I'll be home before it hits 100°F ...

Broth is done and in the fridge. Cutting fresh pineapple, now ...

Gave the bucks some pineapple for a treat.

I hate garbage disposals. I wish I could re-do the kitchen now and get rid of the damn thing. Even when we don't really use it, that side causes clogs ...

My hands smell like pineapple. Nice.

Hmm. The boys must be full, or they don't like pineapple ...

Here is what my mom painted today.
Mmm. Dinner. Lamb shoulder chop; foraged wild blackberries with cream cheese; raw milk with potato starch.

I'm going to paint today! It's not going to be nearly as hot as predicted! The heatwave forecast has been pushed to start on Monday ...

Tomorrow is the Co-op Tasting Fair. I'm going after I clean cages. Not sure if my mom wants to come with me. Many of the co-ops' vendors will be there with free samples of their foods and other products. I just RSVP'd. I hope to stop and check the wild berry bushes that I took pics of a couple weeks ago on the way there, too.

OMG! A friend got me John Barrowman's new album!! Listening now ... love it so much.

Just finished 2½ hours of painting. It was getting hot up there under the deck awning! My mom started on the deck skirting early this morning, too. We did a lot today. But, I am done until Monday. She likes to go out early in the morning, so will be doing the rest of the skirting and the lower part of the deck-side wall in the next week or so.
My mom had to cut down all the canna lilies the other day so she could get to the skirting. It's a very narrow space.
I need to repair the entrance ceiling before it can be painted. It is sagging. Should just need a couple of screws.
The end is near!

When we came in, my mom gave Robin and Sheriff a half apple each for their lunch. I gave Nikky a piece of freeze-dried raw food (chicken) and she dropped a piece when she bit into it. Ezra got curious and came over to check it out. And, he ate it!!! So, I got another piece for him (beef/salmon) and he ate that!! WooHoo! This is what they had:
B0082C00P8 Primal Pet Foods Freeze-Dried Canine Chicken Formula
Primal Pet Foods
B0093OLLDE Primal Pet Foods Freeze-Dried Feline Beef and Salmon Formula
Primal Pet Foods

I just got samples yesterday, but I may get full bags in the future as a back-up for the homemade. I'll be grinding the meats I got for them after I finish resting and have my own lunch.

I ground up 2 chicken backs and bagged enough for 5 days for Nikky (about 3 oz. each). She'll also get a tiny piece of calf liver with it. She also helped clean up the mess I made. Licked my hand clean and the floor and one of the bowls! Ezra will be more problematic in the complete change-over. He threw up kibble crap about 20 minutes after he snagged the raw food this morning. Didn't realize he'd already eaten that. It takes different enzymes to digest raw and also the digestion rate is different than cooked, extruded crap. So, we'll have to wait until he's done with the kibble and any canned foods we still have around here to switch him over. Nikky has no kibble left after today.

I've decided I don't like my kombucha flavored with apple. I have 4 bottles left and won't make it that way again. Don't like the flavor. It's the first flavoring I've disliked since I started making it.

OMG! I just listened to John Barrowman's new album, You Raise Me Up! LOVE IT! Loch Lomond is so beautiful! I'm not sure how long this free listen will be up, so hurry over there. It is all the songs, in full! The actual album will be released on Monday in the UK.

Spent all my money this morning. Paid on a bill, then I got a lot of stuff for the critters to last the next couple of weeks. Nikky will be fully on raw food starting this weekend. No more kibble crap. Ezra ... still trying ... but my mom is not helpful ... I will be grinding chicken backs, gizzards, hearts and bones, plus some calf liver and big sardines to freeze for their meals tomorrow. I also bought some pre-packaged frozen raw at the little pet shop around the corner. And, got a couple of freeze-dried raw samples. Nikky LOVES the little bit I gave her when I got home. I was tempted to get a frozen whole mouse, but my mom probably would have complained ... But, we'll get there.

Dinner ... ground buffalo mixed with red pepper flakes and chunks of bell pepper; sliced tomatoes with black pepper; cream cheese; sliced cactus fried in butter, garlic salt and black pepper. And, raw milk with potato starch.

Huh. The Bonanza site is down. Annoying. Many shop-owners are pissed about it, especially those who pay for theirs'. They didn't send out emails to us that they were moving servers and now, apparently, they are having issues with the move. They were supposed to be done at 4am ...

Two-and-a-half hours of painting done. I made it up to the deck and around the glass doors! My mom got all the plants trimmed (they were about done for the season, anyway ...) on the side of the deck so she can paint the skirting tomorrow. I won't be painting tomorrow as I have to go shopping and pay bills ... But, I will be painting again on Friday.
Bonanza is finally back online.

Oh, came in just in time. Gusty winds picking up for the afternoon, local weather says.

Moved the plants that were hanging over the table. Made a new batch of hummingbird nectar, a new batch of milk kefir and now making my first batch of water kefir! It's a lot easier to make than kombucha, I think! But, I will continue to make that, too! I love fermenting!
It's kind of hard to tell, but what looks like white sand at the bottom of the jar is the water kefir grains. This is half of them.
It has been a long day. My mom decided an hour ago that she wanted to work outside some more. The winds brought clouds, which cooled it off outside enough to turn off the A/C. So, she wanted to start clearing the spent plants in the big brick box. Cutting them back from the wall that will be painted when the deck side is done. But, she has never gotten up there before. She did not want to be out there by herself in case her bad knee gave out. So, I held the step ladder for her. And, I read the first couple of chapters of Mahu by Neil S. Plakcy and drank a bottle of apple/vanilla kombucha and sat on the front steps while she worked. She got half of it done. Not bad - I can't believe how much energy she has regained the past couple of years! It even spit from the clouds for a couple of minutes, which was a surprise. We had a single horseweed growing in there and my mom got tired of seeing it, so she cut it down. It had not gone to flower, yet ... so, we probably won't get another next year ... But, the bucks like it!

My mouth is on fire! My mom coated chicken wings with chili powder AND Cayenne pepper! Whoooo.
This was spicy, but oh-so-good!

I found some more of Laurien Berenson's books! I'm going to start on Underdog tonight! Yes, I know, I just started reading Mahu! But, I usually read more than one thing at a time ... habit. Much of the time, it is several fanfics, so I don't often mention those ...

I forgot to share the postcard I made for my swap the other day. I really like how this one turned out. This was for my swap-bot group's first swap, Feathers Are Fun.
I don't think I shared this ATC, either! It was also for a swap that had to contain a map and a train.

Happy Midsummer Day!

It's been a busy day.

I scraped together enough money to get a couple gallons of gas, so I didn't ride my eBike to Davis for the bunny greens. I was also able to go to the library in hopes they had the next book in the Laurien Berenson series. But, they didn't. So, I requested it from another library and it should arrive at mine next week. I checked the mail and my new water kefir grains arrived! I need to read up on them and will probably start a batch tomorrow. When I got home we moved the furniture around. We ended up moving the fish tank across the room, too. I'll also be moving a couple of the hanging plants tomorrow that are now hanging right over the table. And, finally, I got the 2 parts ordered off eBay for the A/C. I thanked the guy for being so helpful and he offered to ship them Priority for free! Nice! Less than $40! When I had the A/C maintenance done last month, I was quoted nearly $500 from them to change the parts - most of that labor! Crazy!
Now, I'm getting everything ready to barbecue. Ribs and eggplant! I've only had eggplant once before and hated it. But, I am going to try it grilled. I just gave a chunk to each of the bucks and they both liked it.

That wasn't bad. I'll have to get eggplant again and try some other recipes with it.

Just had a small conversation with my former sponsored child on FaceBook. Haven't heard from him in a while. He was my second sponsored child, back in the early '80s. Sadly, I wasn't able to complete the sponsorship through his aging out as I had my first. But, he's done well. He's a professor. :)

It's another day of painting. I am so tired. I stayed up a little later than usual, reading! I'll finish the book today. It's a fun read that I didn't want to put down! I'll have to see about getting Laurien Berenson's other books, now!

Three hours of painting! I am exhausted. But, I got a LOT done today. See!
I was too tired to move the ladder and fill in where the ladder had been leaning. I'll do that on Wednesday.
Tomorrow there will be no painting. I have to ride my eBike to the co-op in Davis in the morning for bunny greens. Then, in the afternoon, we'll be moving some furniture. This time it's actually my idea! Ha! I want to move the big table in here and move the couch to where it is in the doves' room. Just switching them. Then, I'll be able to use the table more for crafting since all of my craft stuff is in here. But, we'll have to move the fish tank out of the way first. So, my mom is going to half empty it while I am gone. Then, I can move it more easily.

Just finished grinding beef heart and chicken bones for Nikky. Should last her about 4 days or so. I'll definitely do this again for her. It will make it so easy to get bones back into her diet. I'd love to get Ezra to eat it, but doubt that will happen ...

Finished reading the book. Must find her others. I really enjoyed it!

Oh, cool. I just got another book wish filled at Paperback Swap - Mahu Men by Neil S. Plakcy. I think I need two more books in that series to complete it.

I finally finished reading The Land of Stories: The Enchantress Returns by Chris Colfer. Such a fun story. I can't wait to get the third story, A Grimm Warning when it comes out next month! But, for now, my next read is the Libary To Go Big Read book, A Pedigree To Die For by Laurien Berenson. It's part of the Adult Summer Reading program at my local library.

I did it! The back wall is finished!! Tomorrow, I start on the deck-side wall! Yay! This side should go pretty quickly this week, barring heavy winds. I really fought with the breeze and the clumping paint today because I wanted to get it done. But, the sun drying the paint and making it clump won't be as big of a problem on the side. I can see getting all of the gray done by the time my vacation is over. And, possibly, starting some of the red trim by next weekend.

Gonna go out in a bit and get those parts numbers from the A/C and get them ordered.

Well, that is not going to be as quick and easy as I had hoped. Finding the parts for such an old unit is going to take some doing. I've got messages out to some sellers on eBay and hope they get back to me with the info I need to order the right parts (if they have them!)

Making a new batch of kombucha. I'm doing a 2nd ferment on the previous batch with apple and vanilla.

Got the barbecue started. I'm using the smallest cast iron Dutch oven on the grill to cook a couple of sweet potatoes in butter, salt & pepper, then I'll be grilling beef heart, and a small cactus paddle (nopal) basted in olive oil. We've never had cactus paddle, but have eaten its fruit (prickly pear.) So, we'll see if we like it. I got a discount bag of them at the co-op the other day. Plus, when my mom moved ours so I could work on the back wall, several broke off, so I told her to save them. I hope we like them. We've got plenty!

OMG! I am stuffed. Everything turned out great. The sweet potatoes just melted in my mouth. The cactus was different, but good. I can get used to it. And ... the beef heart fat was yummy. Sadly, I couldn't eat much of the rest of the heart, though, as it was mostly valves/arteries ... I can't chew those (not enough molars ...) So, I ate some of the crispy fat. Nice and filling. I cut the rest of it into chunks and I'm going to grind it in the old meat grinder tomorrow for some of Nikky's meals.

I'm already on chapter 6 of the Big Read book. It's a fun story. I used to show dogs, so I'm getting into it!

Happy Summer Solstice!

Gah! I'm so tired. Cleaned cages. Scrubbed walls and floors. Vacuumed. Cleaned the yard. Cleaned hummingbird feeders/made my mom refill and hang. Two loads of laundry. Trying to rest before I have to go out and cut Bermuda grass to make hay and then go to the co-op for bunny food ... if I have enough gas ...

I also need to go out and get the parts numbers off of the A/C for the 2 parts I need to replace. I finally have enough money in my PayPal to order them since I sold that old tea set (and it arrived safely.)

NO more today! I've done more than enough! Brought the boys in and turned on the A/C before I left. Got home from the co-op after having spent my last $4 on butter and got greens for the bunnies to last at least until Monday. Pulled into the driveway with the low gas light coming on! Will have to ride my eBike to Davis on Monday for their greens ... Then, I pulled up bindweed to dry for hay. It should be dry by the time I am out of their meadow hay. I'll cut Bermuda grass tomorrow, so I'll have more to dry.

I'll have to get the parts numbers for the A/C tomorrow ... it's too hot out there now to take the metal cover off.

Having my last bottle of kombucha on ice. I need to make a new batch. And, more milk kefir ... I should have my water kefir grains arriving next week, I hope.

And, my mom is being a smart-ass ... wonderful ...

I was going to barbecue this afternoon, but I'm too tired. So, I'll do it tomorrow. In the meantime, we decided on something else for tonight. My mom is going to use her annoying NuWave oven to cook short ribs that aren't thawed out completely ... and steam some broccoli with leftover rice. I had to look up something for her about the NuWave and discovered that I can use it as a dehydrator!!! Yay. I can make some dog treats and some other things this week that I've been wanting to make! Hopefully, I'll be able to get some carne asada later this week to make jerky, too!
