April 30, 2015

Whew. It is toooo hot. It got to 92°F today. But, I got everything done that I had planned, for once! Only thing left is to make lemon juice ice cubes.
The bunnies are 7 weeks old today. This weekend, I'll be putting an ad on Craigslist. Next Saturday (5/9,) they will be going to the small animal sale in Orangevale. Those that don't sell by 12-15 weeks old will be eaten. Patty and Robin will be bred this weekend.
I pulled some weeds at the farm when I bought milk & eggs, and Kayla wanted the whole boxful to herself!
I got in an hour of reading outside. It is cooler out there than in here!

Oh, I bought this puzzle at Michael's on sale today. I bought my mom a latch hook kit of a blue butterfly, too - 40% off coupon!
I can't wait to make this, but I need to finish the one I'm already working on!
It's down to 77°F outside, but it's still 91°F inside ... ugh.
I've got my very cold raw chocolate milk, my ice pack and am now going to my room to read. It's cooler in there ...

April 27, 2015

My stomach hurts from all the stress I had yesterday ... My mom vs. Ezra ... alllll day. Can't take much more ...

And, now, she is complaining that she has no clothes that fit ... Every time I ask her if she wants to go shopping, she says no. So, what does she expect. For it to magically appear! Gah!

So, I just pulled the last of Jeanne's nice clothes that I was going to sell for her to try on. And, she's mumbling that they probably won't fit ....................................

Parker was playing with her towel and had it draped over her head, but by the time I got my camera, she just laid down. Still so cute.
Having a yummy drink. Water with lemon juice ice cubes and frozen strawberries. Mmm.

I am just too hot to do anything right now. It's an oven in here, as usual ... So, I have the fan on the critters and I'm sitting here with one of my ice packs. I really need to get some sewing done, but that would mean turning on lights, too. And, it's just too hot. It's still 90°F. outside, but hotter in here ...

It was not a good morning. I had a bunch of stuff written here, but I have removed it and saved it on notepad for a likely future post ... but, for now, I'll hold off on it ...

I got a terribly late start in planting my lettuce! But, I finally got the seeds planted today, along with some lemon cucumber seeds. Right now, I will just have a small (about 3x3 foot) section, but hope to clear some more room soon to plant more things. I love these seeds. They are from a small local (northern California) company. The lettuce seed is a mix of three varieties. I have planted them before and they did very well. So, hopefully, they will again. And, I love lemon cucumbers, so I planted some behind the lettuce to grow up the fence.

Barbecuing short ribs. Hopefully, I'll get them finished before the noisy neighbors set up in their carport ...

Dinner was so good! Hope to do much more barbecuing this year!

Finished another jigsaw puzzle.
I took these pics for another email swap - theme was treasure:

I had to really think about this one for a bit! But, I think I found something that fits the definition for me. Not really a 'thing', but a feeling.
I will always treasure the time I had with my grandfather and my favorite dogs. My grandfather was only here for my first six years, but I can remember him and feel him pretty vividly, sometimes. He was a great guy. This was his passport photo when he immigrated from Spain to the US. I keep it on my bulletin board, above my desk.
And, I have had many dogs over the years, but Quinn and Gemini, and their mother, Ebony came into my life when I really needed them. They are the reason I am still here. I still honor Quinn and Gemini with my online ID, my crafting (QuinGem's Creations) and even my car license plate - QuinGem is a contraction of their names. I've been using it since 1988, the year they were born. They only lived 9 & 10 years, but they are still 'with' me, always. These pictures were taken in 1989, not long before Ebony died. I keep them above my big craft table.

April 25, 2015

I'm having a 'sick day'. I'm doing nothing for anyone but me. I am not going on my bike ride, either.
I have changed cage-cleaning days to Thursday and Sunday. Last week was just too much for me, after Monday's migraine. Thursdays are hard because it's my payday, so I have to get to the bank, the farm, shop for food and work and it just all takes too damn long. I didn't get home until around 6. Then, had to eat before I could even get to my paperwork. No time to really get anything else done! I don't know how people do that every day. It's not for me. So, Thursdays will be bank, farm, shop and clean cages - not necessarily in that order. I won't be away from home nearly as long. And, then, on Saturdays, since I joined the bike group (which rides in the morning) I had shifted cage cleaning to the afternoon and it's going to be too damn hot soon ... So, they will be cleaned Sunday mornings, now. Anyway ... today, I'm only going to play online, fix a couple of things and do some sewing and put some swaps and a gift together to mail on Monday.

Getting another (regular) headache ... I think it might be from the barometric pressure going up and down. Had a rainstorm overnight and it's not clear skies, yet ... :/

Trying to repair the little china horses. Need to get something to eat, now.

Success! They stand proud again! :)
And, a snack for a late lunch ...
Rice crackers topped with goat cheese, cashew butter, half a date and cardamom.

Another long, somewhat annoying day ... my mom was being a martyr again ...

But, I fixed a lamp (Ezra or the rabbits had nibbled on the cord, so I cut out the bad part and replaced the plug end) and packaged a swap and got half-way through a gift I am making. I should be able to finish it tomorrow or Monday.
I just need to sew and stuff the hearts. And, if certain people are reading this, don't tell the new mommy and daddy what they are getting. ;) I just love that name.

I hope to get some strawberry kombucha bottled tomorrow. Not sure if I have enough sugar to re-do a whole gallon, but probably at least 2 quarts of my continuous-brew.

April 22, 2015

It's Earth Day! What are you doing to celebrate? I'm planting lettuce later today. And, I am going to make sure that I start unplugging my electronics and other things when they aren't being used. I always turn them off, but many are still pulling energy if they are plugged in.

The lettuce planting is actually for an email photo swap. This week is lettuce. Luckily, I still had several varieties of lettuce seed in my stockpile, so didn't have to buy any. These did well in previous plantings. So, after I get the cages cleaned and the cable guy leaves (supposed to be here 'sometime' between 8 & 12 ...), I'll go out back and get the ground cleaned where I want to plant them. It's where I planted them two years ago and is shady most of the day. I also bought some lemon cucumber seeds last week and will probably plant some back there to grow on the fence, too.

I need to go through all of my fabric stash later and see if I have some suitable for baby bibs. If not, I need to get some fabric tomorrow. I hope to make 5 bibs for a gift. I'll just need some fat quarters and trims. I found the pattern I want to use.

I'm not happy with the cable guy. He was an idiot. He was here over two hours. It would've been quicker if I'd done it all my self. And, now, I have to go to the cable office and get the box he said I didn't need. I kept telling him that the analog TV needed it to get the channels. It gets 10 channels and the digital TV gets way more! They are both supposed to get all those channels and the analog can't without that box! He wouldn't get under the house to hook up the lines, so I found one in the living room that would work and pulled it back up through the floor. He acted like he didn't want to get his nice clothes dirty! Grrr. Nearly 20 years of dealing with Charter/Wave and he's the first ass I've dealt with in this company.

Annnnd, she's already complaining. I just want to cry.

I've spent most of the day dealing with this freakin' cable! So, I go to the office and get the digital box. Damn thing won't activate. Tried several times and the guy on the phone says to get a different one. So, I unhook everything and go back to the office and get another. This one activates. No problem with that. BUT! I am getting hundreds of channels on both TVs that I did not ask for. I just wanted local channels (NOT the extended basic line-up!) and that adds up to 44 channels total. So, tomorrow, I am going back to the office to clarify what I am paying for. I'm getting the channels I got before when I couldn't afford it! That's not what I want!

Can I scream, yet?!

Well, I didn't get any of the planting done that I wanted to do today ... :(

Interesting thing happened early this morning when I was pulling the sheets off of all the rabbits' cages. When I was taking Robin's off, I saw what I thought was a tiny piece of hay on one of the clothespins that hold the sheet to his cage. I started to flick the hay off when it moved! It was the teeniest, tiniest baby praying mantis! It had to have come in on some of their food. I carefully took it outside and set it on the asparagus fern.

I got the spoke wrench I bought on eBay a few days ago. Fast delivery! I hope to take it with me on Saturday to the Bike Garage so they can teach me to use it correctly and not ruin my rim. My front tire is not 'true', meaning it isn't aligned correctly. So, the front brake pads rub on the rim unevenly and you can see it kind of wobble, even though the wheel is on tight.

I just finished watching last week's Criminal Minds on Now, I am getting ready to watch this week's episode on the TV! Haven't been able to do that for a while! And, it is Matthew Gray Gubler's most recently directed episode. The ones he directs are usually the creepiest! :)

Back to work tomorrow!

April 20, 2015

Well, this is starting out as a sucky day. Migraine is still here, so I can't drive today ... So, not working or going to the co-op for bunny greens ... and, I got a response to my email from the oil company and my royalty was below $100 for the first time since I inherited it!!! So, no check this month. The amount will be added to next month's, though ... that is the drawback of gas prices being low right now, my royalties are low. It's a conundrum. I want the low gas prices, but I need a decent check! Can't have both. :/

I'll start advertising the bunnies in the next week. The small animal sale is in about 2 weeks. They will be 8 weeks old then. Those that don't sell by about 12-15 weeks will go in the freezer.
Patty and Robin will be bred this weekend. So, by the time Kayla's babies are gone, Patty will have hers'.

Ezra decided to supervise the kitchen from the cabinet shelf.
Normally, there are jars on that shelf, too. But, they're all being used. So, Ez had the whole shelf to lay in.
Well, I had a terrible oops. I was vacuuming cobwebs above my book shelves that have most of my Breyer horse collection on the top shelf ... and, some very vintage china horses that my mom got as a kid ... one of my Breyers tipped over and knocked 2 of the the china horses off. Broken legs ... :,( I may be able to put them back together. Most of the pieces are clean breaks, surprisingly ...
I'll work on them later. Listening to more Bold Venture and working on my jigsaw puzzle now. Migraine is subsiding and moving toward regular headache, finally.

Finished the puzzle.
This is a good old radio series. I'm really enjoying it.
Humphrey Bogart

I may have to take tomorrow off, too ... my head is still killing me ... I hope it is gone by morning ...

April 19, 2015

Migraine day ... won't be going on my walk or to the craft circle this afternoon ... just finished cleaning the rabbit cages. Moved Sheriff back to his cage and Kayla & the bunnies back to the big playpen now that they are too big to crawl through the bars. They were ready for a bigger room!
The bunnies are 5 1/2 weeks old.
Little piggies already finished their lunch!

My mom is working on my last nerve today ...

I found a really good old radio series on the Internet Archive - Bold Venture with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. I didn't remember they had done a radio series!

Just took my last willow bark capsule! I still have my feverfew drops, though. I will end this migraine!

I took these pictures for a fitness photo swap - the theme is 'jump'.
This migraine is a tough one. The heat isn't helping and the damn noisy neighbors and their fumigating BBQ fluid is not helping, either. I had to close up the house and it's 91° in here (83° outside ...) I'm going in my room with my laptop and get it updated. It's cooler in there. I have a fan on the rabbits and doves.

In  my room and updating this old laptop. I forgot how slow it is compared to the desktop! Now to see if I can get those radio shows to play on this.

I'm home! The bike ride went great! I think it was more like 30 miles than 25, but I haven't mapped it to be sure. We left the Bike Garage about 9:15. There were ten of us! Our biggest group and our first male member. We found some new roads and paths that none of us had been on before, which made it a lot of fun. We got to the Farmers Market around 10:30. Shopped for about an hour and had lunch. Met back at the bike racks, then some went back the way we came, some stayed and I went to the co-op and rode my usual road home. I really enjoyed it and hope we do it again.
Getting ready to ride at the Bike Garage.
Crossing over Highway 113
We made it to the Davis Farmer's Market
After I left the Farmer's Market, I went to the co-op and then headed for home. I stopped at the Davis Cemetary to take some pictures for an email photo swap.
For the swap, I had to find some animals in cemetaries. So, I found a cow.
And, I found a lamb.
I'm not sure of the history of this cemetary, but I'm guessing it was started in 1855 and was later upgraded with the fencing in 1941.
I was a bit disappointed not to see the local 'cemetary turkeys' that live in the area. Davis has a couple of flocks of wild turkeys that roam the area. I see them often, just not today.
On my way home on CR102, I passed these lovely great egrets. There were about 10 of them in adjoining fields.

Just got finished cleaning the doves' cages and giving everyone fresh water. They're all drinking more with the hotter weather. I'll clean rabbit cages in the morning.

Now, to ice my knee. It started bothering me on the way home. I expected trouble with my hip that had been bothering me all week, but it's fine!

I've just been reading about trees dropping huge branches, here in Woodland. The drought is really affecting some of our elderly trees ... :(

It's still 80° at 7:30 at night in April ... I think it got up to 89° today. Tomorrow is supposed to be 92° ... Summer is going to be hell here.

April 17, 2015

I was up knitting until 11:30pm last night so that I could mail the knitted dishcloth swap on time today! For my first try, I guess it turned out alright ...
I like the way the variegated yarn made a design in it. I still have to work on my cast on edge being too loose.

I am so annoyed that my oil check is very late this month. It rarely comes later than the 13th ... I need that check! I will have to call the company Monday if it doesn't show up tomorrow ... :(

I rode my ebike to the post office to get that swap mailed and then stopped at the cable office and scheduled them to come out on Wednesday to hook the cable TV back up. I am just not up to crawling under the house this week ... I am just so sick of my mom complaining about the TV. She can't get more than one channel with the antenna ... nag, nag, nag ...

Well, tomorrow is going to be a real test for me. The bike group is riding to the Davis Farmer's Market. It is a 25-mile round trip and I'll be pulling my cart. I am still tempted to cancel because my hip has been acting up all week ... but, I really want to go. I need to check the charge on my ebike batteries and phone & camera batteries before I go to bed and air up the tires on the ebike and the cart.

April 15, 2015

It's been a long and very windy day. I had planned on FINALLY finishing the painting that I didn't finish on the eave trim last year! But, there was no way I was getting on the ladder and then the roof with 35mph gusts ... no way. Not today ... So, I didn't. Some day I will finish painting the house!

But, after I finished cleaning cages and letting the bunnies run around the house, I finally finished sewing a pair of hot pads for a swap. They turned out alright, I guess.
And, I finished another puzzle. This one was a favorite when I was a kid. It was water damaged years ago, so I found an identical one on eBay!
I also made lemon juice ice cubes (cut a bagful of organic lemons and juiced them to fill an ice cube tray.) I love adding them to water with a touch of honey or maple syrup.

And, I made Roasted Garlic to go with our dinner of turkey breast cutlets and strawberries & cream. Mmmmm.

I also went to the PO to mail my Deathcare Penalty to the IRS, so it would be postmarked in time. :(

Today is Ezra P. Standish-kitty's 4th birthday. Such a handsome green-eyed little devil. ;) I just woke him up to take these pics! First without flash and then with flash. He was not amused. :)

April 14, 2015

I did it! I filed my taxes on time. A day early, even! I owe the Feds $50 this year because of the Deathcare Penalty. But, I'm getting a whole $5 back from the state of CA.! Lucky me! And, somehow, I made over $500 LESS this year, than last ...:/

It seems weirdly quiet in here without all the extra male doves cooing all day! Pablo sent me pictures of the doves this morning in their new digs.
