March 31, 2016

Well, I sure hope that April will be better than March has been. Today just hasn't been my day ... the cheap spare tire cost $82.00 ... I locked my car keys in the car (first time in my life!) and had to break into my own car! I had to buy a screwdriver set to do it (I was at a Dollar General, so it was only $2.50)! I had to ruin the window gasket on the little triangle window on the rear drivers' side door. Not sure how much that will cost to replace. I can't get the window back in, so Curtis wants to see it tomorrow and see if he can fix it or if I'll have to go to one of the car window places ... I would have called him, but I was in Esparto and it was already after 2 and I had to be home by 4 ... because, I thought I had a potential bunny buyer that was supposed to come at 4, but they never showed (of course ...) Curtis is in West Sacramento, so it would have been at least 2 hours for him to come from there and stop in Woodland to get my spare keys and then drive up to Esparto ... and, to top it all off!!!! The check engine light came back on!!!! I was going to get it smog tested today ... what a day ... I just want to cry ...

Just heard back from my farmer - no milk until May or June!! :( But, they have eggs, which I don't need any right now ... sucks. I'm missing my raw milk!

Had to clip my 3 older chickens' wings. They were learning to flap-climb the fence! Can't have that!

March 27, 2016

For some reason, the blog is not forwarding my posts to email the way I've always had it do. So, please go directly to the blog to see the past few posts, if you've missed them. For my email group, I'll just have to remember to copy/paste the blog and send an email until it starts working again ...

Just finished cleaning cages. I've had the three older chicks out in the backyard, playing in the rabbit compost. It's a nice day. Some of the rabbits are out on the deck. But, I can't fit Patty and her bunnies' cage through the door and I don't want Parker's bunnies to get a chill, so they can't go out. I just took pics of Parker's brood. They are pretty! I'm thinking that Sheriff may have some of the Harlequin gene or something else that causes some unusual markings. One of the bunnies has a Harlequin patch. Going to be pretty. Just like the litter he sired with Kayla. They are 4 days old.
Mismarked Japanese Harlequin
I'm having my first real smoothie of the season. And, added bee pollen for the first time! Mmmm. Strawberries, banana, milk, bee pollen, hemp seed, chia seed, almond butter, maple syrup, apple cider vinegar, vanilla and gelatin.

Yikes. I have two swaps that need to be mailed tomorrow! I have all the stuff, just need to package and label ... almost forgot all about them!

Brought all the critters in for the night. Made my mom help. She carried the big chick in and put in the coop. They were having a good time out there! Supposed to be very windy tomorrow, so won't have any critters out while I am gone to work.

Ugh. I really need to get my taxes done this week. I dread seeing how much I'm going to have to pay for the mandate penalty. Pisses me off ...

March 26, 2016

My cousin is a miracle-worker! I'm getting my car back, this afternoon! Thank goodness! I don't think I could've driven the little car this week. My foot is killing me (nerve problem in my right foot.) I have to have cruise control! New spark plugs, air filter, fuel filter and complete front brakes (rotors, pads, etc.) It's got a new life! He wants me to put at least 200 miles on it before I take it to get the smog test done. So, should be able to do that on Thursday. Then, it will finally be 'legal' again (almost six months late!)

The wind is horrible this morning - and cold. Blew stuff all over my deck. Chicks are fine. Their coop is solid and very heavy and they have a cover that goes over them at night.

It's been a long day, but I have my car back. And, it runs like new! It does need a new tire. The one that had a constant slow leak that I had to fill every week had a screw in it that could not be repaired because of where the screw was located. So, Curtis put the spare in it's place, for now. He said the other three tires are still very good (they were fairly new when he gave me the car a few years ago ...) And, it needs two hubcaps. I'll find those next week. Thursday, I will get the new tire and the smog test. He doesn't think I need to get another car, at this time ... :/ I'm going to keep my GoFundMe page open, for now, though ...

March 24, 2016

Parker had her babies during the night. Beautiful little bunnies. They are huge. Six of them.

The 3 chicks survived the night in the coop out on the deck! They are all getting along well and I think the big one kept the younger two warm.

Long day ... Got three stores serviced, got some food shopping done and bought 2 more chicks!

Dominique - one day old

March 22, 2016

I've been writing 3/21 on my work papers all day! Wrong date! Oh, well.
After I finished my stores for the day, I stopped at the car lot of an old friend of my dad's ... he remembered me! He's in his 80s and I haven't seen him in 16 years. My dad bought me an old Jeep Cherokee that got me to Florida, back in 2000! Loved that old Jeep. While I was there another person I knew many years ago stopped by - hadn't seen Lee in probably 25 or more years. Whoa. Anyway, Kelly has a car that I really like and might be able to get ... not sure, yet. I want to talk to my cousin about it first. It has a new transmission and 160,000 miles on it. New smog cert. Good-looking tires, etc. It's a Ford Taurus wagon. I only saw one small dent on one of the back doors that's barely visible. Kelly wants $4995 and will take a trade-in. So, ... it is a possibility. I am going to continue looking, though. I may find something better.

I butchered the cross-beak chick when I got home. Poor baby was struggling. Skin and bones. Nikky will have him for dinner tomorrow. Was a little cockerel. The other three chicks are out in the deck coop, getting some fresh air and meeting each other. The older one seems to be accepting the two younger ones. They will come back inside tonight. It's still a bit too chilly at night for the younger two. I will be getting two more chicks on Friday, if plans work out - a Silver Lace Wyandotte and a Dominique. I've wanted Dominiques for years. They are a heritage breed. Hope I luck out and get a pullet (hen.)

Nikky is being an ass. I brought the chicks back in and put them in a temporary bin together. I'm scrubbing the big aquariums tomorrow that they were in. Nikky is going nuts trying to climb up Robin's cage that the bin is setting on! Ugh. She is such a possessive mama - she think all the critters are her babies. And, she MUST SEE THEM NOW. She has a very shrill whine - ouch.

March 20, 2016

This year has not been very good, so far ... The past few weeks have been ... upsetting. But, things will work out, I suppose.
I got a fix-it ticket a couple of months ago, because I don't have a current year's tag on my car's license plate (I have until April 19 to prove it's fixed.) The registration was paid on time (last October), but with the check engine light on continually, it will not pass the smog test ... so, I can't get the current sticker ... Finally, I had some extra money to get (hopefully!) the right part to get that engine light off. Alas ... no. After three different parts, it is finally off. BUT!! It now wants to die every time I stop and is running very rough/not idling correctly. And, the brakes are shot and it needs at least one new tire (constant slow leak ...) Curtis has had the car at his house for the past two weeks. I'm using my old car, which has issues of it's own. But, at least it stays running. (It is the car I traded Curtis for, when he gave me the current car ... long story ...) Anyway, my car has over 200,000 miles on it, now. It is going to nickel-and-dime me for parts to keep it running. So, I started a GoFundMe page to get another car. I've added a link to my blog. I am over one-third of the way to my goal to get enough to either outright buy a used car or have a really good down payment on a low priced used car. I actually saw one yesterday that I wouldn't mind having. But, I'm going to be picky about what I get and not jump at the first one I see. I also need to find out if I can use my car as a trade-in of some sort.

Last weekend was the worst, so far. Ezra is gone. He will be the last cat. I am not a cat person, never was. But, I've loved all the cats I've ever had ... I'll miss him. I think I cried more for him than any in the past.

So, I will most likely get another dog in the future. Nikky needs a buddy. And, she misses Ezrie. She's still looking for him.

The bunnies and birds are keeping me very busy. I have 5 bunnies to sell soon. One is from Kayla's last November litter. He's 4 months old and gorgeous. And, Patty's 4 black babies are 6 weeks old and will be ready to go in a couple of weeks. Parker is due any day.
The cross-beak Ameracauna chick will be culled this week. He's having more and more trouble eating and his hatch-mate is 3 times his size ... :( The two younger chicks are doing great, though.
Golden Lace Wyandotte and Brown Danish Leghorn.
This Ameracauna is getting big. Almost ready to go outside.

March 6, 2016

Cages are cleaned, critters are fed. I have 2 rabbits to butcher, but can't do that until after my cousin comes to work on the car ... still waiting. It's going to be after dinner before I can get to the rabbits, at this rate ... it's also about to rain, so I'm going to have to bring them back in the house ... ugh.

And, my mom has the TV on too loud ... again ... she's watching The Tingler ... lots of screaming.

Yep. Rain ...

Crap. If I realized he'd be this late, I would've done the rabbits already ... I just didn't want to have to stop in the middle of a mess ...

Well, crap ... new part is in the car; check engine light is off (YAY!!) ... can't figure out why it has been running so rough and dying at stops this past week. It is not idling right ... so, tomorrow, I'll be taking it to cousin's house and getting my old car (he still hasn't sold it ...) to use while he tries to figure out the problem ... gah! One thing after another ...

Now, to rest for a bit before I start slaughtering bunnies. ;)

Only got one bunny done. The other got a reprieve ... I'm not very fast at the whole process, so starting later than planned kind of made it impossible to get them both done before dinner ... :/ Oh, well ...

But, I did get Patty and her babies moved into the bigger cage this morning!
They are 3½ weeks old.

March 5, 2016

Another rainy day. :)

Cousin called. Car part arrived. He will come over tomorrow and put it in. Hope it works, this time. This will be the third part! Ugh.

That damn little Brown Danish Leghorn is a noisy little shit! The others are so quiet! Food, water and warmth are all taken care of, and he has a full crop, but still just chirping up a storm. Must be a very vocal breed or is practicing to be a rooster! Ha!

Today's to-do list:
100 jumps on the trampoline - done
Vacuum laundryroom and bathroom floor - done
Declutter laundryroom cabinets - done
Scrub rabbit nest box - done
Clean surfaces of refrigerators and freezer - done

This storm is still going strong. The lights flickered a few minutes ago, so I'd better shut the computer down.

March 4, 2016

What a long day! Very rainy today. Scary on the road when you barely have brakes and the car wants to die ... Hopefully, tomorrow part of that will be solved ... if the car part arrived. Haven't heard from my cousin, yet.

I got two more chicks on my way home today. I should have got them yesterday. I wanted to get a Brahma, but they were already sold out today ... so, I got one Golden Lace Wyandotte (which I wanted) and one Brown Danish Leghorn. They are already settled in with full tummies.
Golden Lace Wyandotte (left) and Brown Danish Leghorn - 2 days old
Ameracaunas - 2 weeks old.

I had a nice surprise in the mail - a patronage refund for last year from my co-op. Almost $70! Plus, a $5 coupon on meat. Spent it on food, of course.

March 2, 2016

My mom is 76 today ...
She melted the top of the popcorn popper that I bought her a couple weeks ago ... ugh. I have no idea how she did that ...

Today's to-do list:
100 jumps on the trampoline - done
Make almond fudge - done
Scrub surface of ovens and stovetops - done
Clean out dead branches around tomato plants (they survived the winter and already have flowers and tomatoes!) - done
Open GoFundMe page - done

The chickies had their first outing! They helped me clean up the compost area and forage for the bunnies' dinner. The chocolate-colored chick found an earthworm and ate the whole damn thing! Did not get a pic of that. Poor cross-beak chick was so pissed and chasing the other. I doubt she could have eaten it, poor thing. But, they both ate some ants and other miniscule critters, and they both had a grand time digging and scratching in real dirt. They did not want to come in, but they are too small to be outside unsupervised and still need some heat at night. They are two weeks old.

This is something that I thought I would never do ... ask for help ... I've opened a GoFundMe page to, hopefully, get a car. Please share this link:

March 1, 2016

I really need a new car ... cousin worked on my car yesterday. Still, the check engine light remains on ... I can't keep buying more parts for it, just so it will pass the smog test. Plus, I need new brakes, desperately ... and, whatever he worked on yesterday has messed up the idle. Keeps wanting to die every time I stop ... :/ Another new part should arrive Saturday ...

Today's to-do list -
100 jumps on the trampoline - done
vacuum kitchen floor - done
vacuum kitchen cabinets - done
sort batteries and ink cartridges and put in car for recycling - done
flatten cardboard - done

I'm seriously considering a GoFundMe page to get another car. Just spent about an hour going through the site and it looks doable ... will have to ponder on it some more.

I'm hooked on my computer Solitaire the past two days ...
